Some good-quality nylon masonry plugs can be suitable for mounting a TV bracket on sound solid brick or concrete. However, “standard wall plug” is not a complete fixing specification.
The exact plug, screw, drill diameter and fixing arrangement must suit the wall material, its condition and the bracket being installed. Hollow brick, soft brick, concrete block and dot-and-dab walls cannot all be treated like sound solid brick.
I commonly use selected Fischer or Rawlplug masonry fixings, but the name on the packet does not decide whether a fixing is suitable. The exact product still has to match the wall and be installed according to its manufacturer’s instructions.
Will Standard Wall Plugs Hold a TV on Brick?
They sometimes can, but the answer cannot be decided from the television’s weight alone.
Before selecting the fixings, I consider:
- Whether the wall is genuinely solid brick
- The condition of the proposed fixing area
- The television’s verified weight, where available
- Whether the bracket is fixed, tilting or full-motion
- The width and fixing-hole arrangement of the wall plate
- How far a full-motion bracket extends from the wall
- The number and position of usable fixing points
- The exact plug and compatible screw specified by the fixing manufacturer
- Whether plaster, render or another surface layer must be passed through first
A plug that is suitable for one solid brick wall may not be suitable for a wall made from hollow brick, lightweight block or damaged masonry.
This is why I do not publish one universal TV-weight limit for standard wall plugs.
Why the Exact Fixing Matters More Than the Brand
Fischer and Rawlplug both manufacture different plugs and anchors for different building materials. Buying a recognised brand is a sensible starting point, but it does not remove the need to choose the correct product.
The fixing manufacturer may specify:
- The building materials in which the fixing can be used
- The required drill diameter
- The minimum hole depth
- The compatible screw diameter and length
- Required spacing between fixing points
- Required distance from an edge
- The installation method
- Published performance under particular test conditions
Those requirements can change between products from the same manufacturer. For example, the Fischer DuoPower range includes different plug lengths, drill diameters and compatible screw sizes.
That is why I would not choose a fixing simply because it is described as a “10mm Fischer plug” or a “heavy-duty Rawlplug.” I need to know the exact product and the wall it is going into.
Fixings supplied with a television bracket are not automatically unsuitable, but they are not automatically right for every wall either. Their intended wall material and installation requirements must be confirmed before use.
Brick and Concrete Are Not Identical
Brick and concrete can both provide strong fixing surfaces, but they do not always drill in the same way.
On many sound brick walls, I use a Milwaukee drill with a Bosch CYL-9 MultiConstruction bit. Bosch lists this bit for materials including brick and concrete, but that does not mean it is the right choice for every concrete wall. See the Bosch CYL-9 product information.
Hard concrete can be slower and more difficult to drill, particularly when it contains hard aggregate. For harder concrete, I commonly use a Makita SDS-Plus rotary hammer with an appropriate SDS bit.
The equipment is selected from the actual wall and how it responds during drilling. I do not use a universal rule that every brick wall needs one drill and every concrete wall needs another.
If a detector indicates metal or the drill encounters an unexpected obstruction, I stop and reassess the fixing position. I do not continue drilling blindly through something that has not been identified.
Solid Brick, Hollow Brick and Block Need Different Decisions
A wall may look solid from the room while containing a different material behind its finished surface.
The possible constructions include:
- Solid clay brick
- Hollow or perforated brick
- Dense concrete block
- Lightweight or aerated block
- Poured or reinforced concrete
- Solid masonry covered with plaster
- Plasterboard fixed over masonry using dot-and-dab adhesive
- Older brick and lime mortar
These materials do not all accept the same fixing in the same way.
A hollow response while drilling, unexpected dust, a void or a fixing that will not tighten properly can indicate that the wall is different from what was expected. When that happens, I stop and reconsider the fixing rather than continuing with the original plan.
If plasterboard has been fixed over the masonry using dot-and-dab adhesive, the fixing arrangement must also account for the gap between the board and the solid wall behind it. It should not be treated as exposed brick.
Older Brick Needs a More Careful Approach
I work in many older and Victorian properties across London. Some have sound, dense brick, while others contain softer brick, old repairs or lime mortar that can crumble more easily.
The age of a property does not confirm the condition of its masonry. I inspect the actual fixing area and pay attention to how the wall responds as drilling begins.
On softer or older brick, I normally take a slower approach and avoid using an aggressive drilling method automatically. If the brick begins to crumble, the hole becomes oversized or a fixing will not tighten correctly, I stop and change the fixing position or method.
A television bracket should not be installed into a questionable fixing point merely because the original measurements placed a hole there.
Why Full-Motion Brackets Change the Assessment
A full-motion bracket is not automatically better or worse than a fixed bracket. It is designed for a different purpose.
When the arm is extended, the television sits farther from the wall. This creates additional leverage at the wall plate and fixing points.
For a full-motion installation, I assess:
- The television’s verified weight
- The length and movement of the bracket arm
- Whether the bracket uses a single or double arm
- The size and design of the wall plate
- The available fixing positions
- The condition and construction of the wall
- How frequently the customer expects to move the television
- Cable length and clearance while the bracket moves
I do not select one plug size simply because the television is over a particular screen size. The fixing system must be decided from the complete installation.
If a suitable fixing arrangement cannot be established for the additional leverage, I may recommend a fixed bracket, another full-motion bracket with a more suitable wall plate, or a revised position.

Checking for Pipes and Cables Before Drilling
Before drilling, I assess likely pipe and cable routes and scan the proposed fixing area using a Bosch D-tect 120.
Bosch states that the detector can identify objects including magnetic and non-magnetic metals, water-filled plastic pipes, wooden substructures and live or non-live cables within stated detection limits. See the Bosch D-tect 120 specifications.
A detector helps reduce risk, but it cannot guarantee that every concealed pipe or cable will be found. The result can be affected by the object, depth, wall construction and surrounding materials.
I therefore consider the detector result alongside visible sockets, likely cable routes, plumbing positions and the building layout. If a likely service route conflicts with a fixing position, I stop and discuss another position before drilling.

A Same-Day Brick Installation in Bexleyheath, DA7
On Saturday 22 August 2026, a customer in Bexleyheath, DA7 contacted TV Mount Mate after buying a new television from Currys. They wanted it mounted on the same day.
The property was built during the 1960s, but I did not select the fixings from the age of the house. I inspected the proposed fixing area and confirmed that the brick was in sound condition before drilling.
The customer had already bought a Sandstrøm SFMGL23 full-motion bracket. Its wall plate, movement and compatibility with the television still needed to be considered alongside the wall.
I used Fischer masonry fixings selected for the brick and drilled the holes to suit those fixings. The exact Fischer product and screw dimensions were not recorded for this article, so I am not publishing an estimated specification or presenting this job as a universal fixing recommendation.
Before the television was lifted, I checked that the wall plate was level, that every fixing was properly seated and that there was no visible movement at the wall. After mounting, the bracket engagement, movement, clearances and cables were checked before the installation was completed.
This project shows why a bracket’s advertised television-size range does not decide which wall fixings should be used. Bracket compatibility and wall fixing suitability are separate checks.

When Supplied Plastic Plugs Failed in Chigwell
In early May 2026, I attended a property in Chigwell, Essex, IG7 after a customer noticed that their 55-inch Sony television and full-motion bracket were becoming loose.
The customer had installed the bracket using plastic wall plugs supplied in the bracket box. When I inspected the installation, the plugs were damaged and loose inside the drilled holes. They were no longer holding the wall plate securely.
The customer said an impact driver had been used during the original installation. Excessive tightening can damage a plug or an incorrectly drilled hole, but I could not establish one single cause from the completed installation alone.
The important finding was that the existing fixing arrangement was no longer secure.
I removed the television, bracket and failed fixings. The bracket was then refitted at new fixing positions using replacement Rawlplug masonry fixings and compatible coach screws selected for the wall and bracket.
The precise Rawlplug product and coach-screw dimensions have not been verified from the packaging, so they are deliberately not published here.
The existing full-motion bracket could be reused. The problem was the previous fixing arrangement, not proof that every plastic wall plug or every full-motion bracket will fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not automatically. Check the supplied fixing’s manufacturer, product information, intended wall material and installation requirements. If its suitability cannot be confirmed, replace it with a fixing that can be verified for the wall.
No. A larger plug requires a larger hole and may introduce other considerations, including fixing spacing, distance from masonry edges and the condition of the material around the hole. The correct fixing is the one specified for the wall and installation, not simply the largest one available.
